Dungeon Delve Progress

To give a little background of the challenge first: the basic idea is that a D&D character is lost in a dungeon with seemingly no escape and is in dangerous/enemy territory. Plus, they've been lost in the dungeon for so long that they're in pretty bad shape (cut, bruised, exhausted, etc.). The illustration has to both come across as threatening and hopeless ideally.

So, I still haven't decided which sketch I'll be working from. I'm stuck between #2 and 3. I'm not sure if either drawing is great for the challenge or gets those earlier stated themes across. I did some color thumbnails to see if I could figure out any more ideas or make some progress. Here are the color thumbnails for sketch #2:

And here are the thumbnails for #3:

Original sketches are here also: Original Ideas

#3 doesn't really change that much and has less variety, which is why I'm starting to like #2 more now. Sketch #2 has a wary character trying to escape some massive, subterranean area only to discover a new room filled with tell-tale blood stains all over the floor. #3 has a close up of the character in horrible shape attempting to desperately make their way across a tiny ledge with a huge pit below them. Now to figure out which works better :/

Also, I got some great reference for these color tests from some Magic the Gathering art found here:

On a side note

So, I'm a sucker for super-cute/kawaii things:

and absolutely disgusting, biological things (like creatures):

What's up with that? Anyway, they're not the coolest nasty monsters I've seen but they're still neat. Oh Resident Evil 4, you scare the crap out of me every time I play  try to play you.

Currently working on this challenge over at ArtOrder- Dungeon Delve Challenge

The prize for winning is a published piece for D&D, how awesome is that?  I've got some idea sketches for now:

A new work in progress, slightly scary butcher guy image-
Maybe he'll eventually graduate from "in progress" to some sort of finished work. Perhaps with a background of another slightly scary butcher guy, eh?-
The guy in the back will be extra creepy too. I sort of image this as a scene out of Courage the Cowardly Dog :)

So funny, I couldn't stop laughing-

Drawings

So what am I working on now? Here are a few drawings I'm playing around with for now:

A craptastic store room/a secret smuggling base in the sewer environment. I finally got around to playing Uncharted 2, which was a great adventure game and had much better fighting and shooting mechanics than the first game. There was a lot of inspiration from Uncharted 2 for this drawing, the environments and textures in that game are fantastic.

When I'm drawing environments I usually go about it in two ways: the aesthetic route vs. the gameplay route. More often than not I find myself thinking about how the environment can be played by someone or used in a game and then the aesthetics part just falls into place. Couldn't you see Drake sneaking around here and hiding behind boxes of mysterious cargo whilst head-shoting bad guys? This level could be fun :)

Here's a character practice still early in progress:

I'm not really sure where this is going but I like the dark skin and dreads so I'll go from there. This is mostly to practice clothes, which as you can see hasn't been done yet :P

New Blog :D

Well, I've been meaning to start up some sort of blog for a while (preferably one to draw on/post random things I find entertaining on). I'm currently re-doing my portfolio, which will hopefully happen sooner than later...Instead of dumping all my old works here, go here to check out my work!- My Current Website

So, first blog post. Where to start, where to start....well I'm an illustrator that just graduated from college and is now trying to find a job making concept art or the like for game and movie companies. During my last few years of college I realized how much more practice and more art I needed to be doing. So that's my aim: make more, get better, be a kickass concept artist! I love to draw characters, creatures, environments, weapons, etc. Mostly characters and creatures though. As for my life now, I recently moved from Pittsburgh to NY. I'm mostly doing freelance projects for now while continuing to make personal artwork. It looks like New England here which is awesome but it's a little too rural for my liking since I'm used to living in cities :/ Who knows if I'll stay here or not with my goals for the future, I shall see what the future brings.

Anyway, off to more interesting, drawing-filled posts!
